Whether she is writing a new narrative to change social perspectives in the world or reworking an internal policy to be more inclusive, Johanna specializes in all things writing, editing, and storytelling.
She has worked in print, online, and broadcast media for companies like Reader’s Digest, CBC, and Host Broadcast Services, before moving into a media advisory role for the English Montreal School Board where she produced communication materials and reported on events around the after-school enrichment activities, school gardens, and environmental programming. She also facilitated workshops for sharing stories through newswriting and radio.
When it comes to copywriting in the fast-paced world of digital marketing or creating impactful human-interest stories, Johanna wholeheartedly believes in the value of strategic communications, and always manages to pull out the details that matter most.
Johanna’s family originates primarily from Ireland, Germany and France. One side of her father’s family arrived as settlers in Tiohtià:ke, the traditional and unceded homelands of the Kanien’kehà:ka (Mohawk) nation, as far back as the 1700s. Her mother was born on the lands of the Miami nation. Johanna still lives in Tiohtià:ke.
A settler story is a personal history that focuses on your connection to the land. At Phil, we wanted to share our settler stories out of respect for the unceded Indigenous territories we live, work, and play on.
Phil is also committed to building trust by respecting and amplifying Indigenous ways of knowing and the true history of colonialism.
That’s why our settler stories are important to us. What does your story mean to you?
