Phil & Taking Root: Joining forces in the fight against climate change

Taking Root is proud to announce the next phase of its exciting carbon offset program that enables local businesses to contribute to developing social reforestation projects in collaboration with smallscale farmers in Nicaragua. Activities are funded through the sale of third-party verified carbon offsets to businesses and individuals around the world.

What in the world are third-party verified carbon offsets you may ask? That’s exactly what Phil Communications’ mandate is: to help Taking Root better communicate their C02 responsible (CO2R) promotional program to companies who want to better manage their carbon footprints and successfully communicate this to their customers and partners.

Still too many words?

Simply put, through its C02R Program, Taking Root helps companies calculate and offset their carbon footprint, and promote this decision in a clear and understandable way through print and online material. By offsetting their carbon footprint, the company supports community-based reforestation in Nicaragua.

How do trees help offset carbon? Because trees are like pumps, pulling CO2 out of the air and storing it in their wood, 50% of a tree’s dry weight is made of carbon. Why plant trees in Nicaragua? Because Nicaragua is the second poorest country in the Americas, and is in great need of reforestation. Also, closer to the equator, trees can grow up to 10 times faster than in northern climates, making tropical reforestation an affordable and efficient step in the fight against climate change.

Phil Communications will be working with Taking Root to develop the sales and marketing strategy for the C02R Program, to be officially launched in fall of 2013. Phil will create the communications and sales material, including a strong focus on social media strategies to help encourage word of mouth and ultimately, more participation in the program. Phil will create the promotional tools that will be available to companies who sign up for the C02R Program, to help these members promote their carbon offsetting and reduction, and connect with carbon-conscious customers. The kit will include a personalized C02R Program profile on www.co2r.com, promotional material such as shelf talkers and stickers, to name a few, and the use of the C02R emblem that can be easily adapted to all member’s communications material. Members can also consult with Phil’s creative team to create  custom solutions if one of the C02R packages needs adjusting. Taking Root is committed to helping C02R members maximize their visibility through the program and foster triple bottom line operations, benefitting the economy, society and the environment.

Founded in 2007, Taking Root is a non-profit organization based in Montreal, Canada, that develops social reforestation projects in Nicaragua through the sale of carbon footprint management services.
