On December 3, 2013, the first edition of Giving Tuesday marked a milestone in efforts to encourage philanthropic actions.
Most people know about Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Now, Giving Tuesday is a new movement for giving and volunteering, taking place each year after Cyber Monday. This annual “Opening day of the giving season” is a day where charities, companies and individuals join together to share commitments, rally for favourite causes and think about others.
The initiative created a sizeable buzz on social media. People used the hashtag #unselfie on their photos to explain why they were participating. GIV3, one of Phil’s great collaborators, participated actively in promoting this event.
Of course, at Phil, we also wanted to do our part. That’s why we helped the Miriam Home for people with intellectual deficiencies organize their annual Hannukah party on Tuesday evening. Amongst other things, we helped serve refreshments and coordinate a photo session taking place at the Home.
Without initiatives like these, organizations like the Miriam Home couldn’t count on help like this in times of need. We are proud to have contributed, not only by volunteering, but by spreading the idea of Giving Tuesday to encourage a collective movement towards philanthropy. Only by tapping the strength in numbers, can we have the strength to change our world.
